What is a Pool & Billiards tournament bracket?
A pool tournament bracket has to reckon with the break. A player can lose a race without ever getting a real shot at the table — their opponent breaks, runs out, breaks, runs out, and it is over.
That is not a fair way to end somebody's night, and it is the single reason double elimination became the default format across bar leagues, APA and BCA events, and almost every tournament run on a Tuesday in a room with four tables.

Double Elimination
RecommendedDouble elimination is the default in pool, from APA and BCA leagues down to bar tournaments, and it is entirely about the break. Losing a race while barely getting to the table happens, and a second life fixes it. With matches running 20 to 30 minutes on four tables, a 16-player double elimination bracket is a single evening.

Also worksSingle elimination only makes sense when you are genuinely short on tables or time — a 16-player knockout is 15 matches instead of 31. Expect complaints from whoever gets sat down by a bad break in round one.
Full Single Elimination guideHow Pool & Billiards tournaments actually run
- Typical field
- 8 to 32 players. Bar tournaments typically run 16 on three or four tables.
- Match length
- 20 to 30 minutes. Races to 3 to 5 in 8-ball; races to 7 to 9 in 9-ball.
- Scoring
- Race to N — the first player to win N racks takes the match. Longer races cut down luck, shorter races protect the schedule.
- Tiebreakers
- Rarely needed in a bracket. For league play: match record, then racks won, then head-to-head.
- Seeding
- Seed by handicap — APA skill level or Fargo rating. Handicapped races, where the stronger player needs more racks to win, are how bar leagues keep a mixed field competitive.

Frequently asked questions
- What format do pool tournaments use?
- Double elimination, almost universally — it is the standard for APA and BCA league play and for bar tournaments. Because a player can lose a race without getting a decent shot at the table, a losers bracket is what makes the result reflect who actually played better.
- How long should the race be?
- Races to 3 to 5 in 8-ball and 7 to 9 in 9-ball for early rounds. Longer races reduce the influence of the break and of luck, so extend the race for the semi-finals and the final if the schedule allows.
- How do handicaps work in a pool tournament?
- Each player gets a race length based on their skill level, so a stronger player might need 7 racks while their opponent needs 3. It is how APA and most bar leagues let a beginner and a shortstop play a genuinely competitive match. Seed by the underlying rating, not by the handicap.
