What is a Darts tournament bracket?
A darts tournament bracket decides who throws against whom and how forgiving the night is. It matters more in darts than in most sports, because darts is streaky in a way that punishes single-elimination formats.
A player can lose to somebody having the night of their life — a couple of 180s and a 12-darter — and be nowhere near the worse player. How your bracket handles that is the difference between a good pub night and a room full of people who came, lost once, and went home.

It gives everyone a second life without doubling the length of the night: 16 players is 30 to 31 matches, and at 15 to 20 minutes on two or three boards that is a single evening. Nobody drives home having thrown for twenty minutes.

- 15 to 20 minutes for best of 5 legs. A set format (best of 5 sets) pushes past 30.
- Scoring
- 501, straight start, double out. Best of 5 legs is the standard match; finals are often best of 7.
- Tiebreakers
- Legs won, then leg difference, then a sudden-death deciding leg with a bull-up to decide who throws first.

- What format is best for a darts tournament?
- Double elimination for most club, pub and open events. Darts has enough variance that a single leg can go against a much better player, and a losers bracket costs you only a couple of extra hours. Professional events use single elimination, but their fields are already qualified.
- How many boards do I need?
- One per concurrent match. A 16-player double elimination bracket is 30 to 31 matches; on three boards at 18 minutes a match, that is roughly three hours. On one board it is an all-nighter.
- Best of how many legs should I use?
- Best of 5 legs (first to 3) is the standard for early rounds — long enough to reduce luck, short enough to keep the schedule. Move to best of 7 for semi-finals and the final, where you want the better player to win.
