What is a Cornhole tournament bracket?
A cornhole tournament bracket is the schedule that turns a pile of two-person teams into a champion. It decides who throws against whom, what happens when you lose, and how many boards you need to keep everyone playing instead of standing around with a beer.
Cornhole is unusual in that the matches are very short and the field is often large and mixed-ability — a charity event might have 24 teams ranging from ACL-rated pros to people who have never thrown a bag. The format you pick is what keeps that from being miserable for half of them.

Double Elimination
RecommendedCornhole matches are short — frequently under 15 minutes — so you can afford to give everyone a second life. Double elimination is the ACL's competitive standard for exactly this reason: one unlucky round against a strong pair should not end the day for someone who paid an entry fee and drove out. With 16 teams you will play 30 to 31 matches, which three or four boards can clear in an afternoon.

Also worksIf you have 8 teams or fewer and boards to spare, round robin gives everyone the maximum number of throws, which is the entire point of a backyard or league night. Everyone plays everyone, the standings table decides it, and nobody is sitting out twenty minutes in.
Full Round Robin guideHow Cornhole tournaments actually run
- Typical field
- 8 to 32 teams of two. Blind draw (random partners) is the norm at bar and charity events; seeded doubles at ACL-sanctioned ones.
- Match length
- 10 to 20 minutes. Games go to 21 points with cancellation scoring, win by one.
- Scoring
- 3 points for a bag in the hole, 1 for a bag on the board. Only the higher-scoring team scores in each frame — the bags cancel out.
- Tiebreakers
- Head-to-head first, then point differential (points for minus points against), then total bags in the hole.
- Seeding
- Blind draw for social events. For competitive play, seed by ACL rating or last event's finish, then bracket so the top two seeds can only meet in the final.

Frequently asked questions
- What bracket format do cornhole tournaments use?
- Double elimination is the standard for competitive cornhole, including ACL-sanctioned events. Matches are short enough that a losers bracket does not blow up the schedule, and it means one bad game against a strong pair does not send a paying entrant home after twenty minutes. Smaller social events often use round robin or pool play instead.
- How many boards do I need for a cornhole tournament?
- One board set per concurrent match. A 16-team double elimination bracket runs 30 to 31 matches; with four board sets and 15-minute games that is roughly two hours. With two sets, plan for closer to four.
- Should I run a blind draw or let people pick their partner?
- Blind draw is friendlier for mixed-ability crowds and charity events because it splits the strong players up. Pick-your-partner suits leagues and competitive events where pairs practise together. EasyBracket randomises the draw and the seeding for you either way.
