What is a Chess tournament bracket?

Chess is the game the Swiss system was invented for, and it is the reason chess tournaments look nothing like a knockout bracket. Nobody is eliminated: every player plays every round, and pairings each round put you against someone on the same score as you.

That means the tournament sorts itself. After a handful of rounds the players who kept winning have all played each other, and the standings — decided on points, then tiebreaks — produce a champion without anyone being sent home after a single loss.

The best bracket format for Chess

Swiss

Recommended

The Swiss system exists because chess had this exact problem. It crowns a clear winner in about log2(N) rounds instead of the N-1 a full round robin needs — 32 players finish in 5 rounds, not 31 — while nobody is knocked out. A player who loses in round one still gets a full day of chess against opponents at their own level, which is precisely why FIDE uses Swiss for open tournaments.

Round Robin

Also works

Round robin is the format for small, strong fields: a club championship with 8 to 10 players, or an invitational. Everyone plays everyone, so the final table is unarguable. Past about 12 players the round count stops fitting in a weekend.

How Chess tournaments actually run

Typical field
Swiss handles anything from 10 to 300+ players. Rounds needed is the ceiling of log2(N): 5 rounds for 32 players, 7 for 128.
Match length
Blitz: under 10 minutes, so 9 rounds fit in an evening. Rapid: 15 to 25 minutes a game. Classical: 3 to 5 hours, which caps you at 2 rounds a day.
Scoring
1 point for a win, half a point for a draw, 0 for a loss.
Tiebreakers
Buchholz — the sum of your opponents' scores, rewarding whoever had the harder draw — is the usual first tiebreak, then Sonneborn-Berger, then direct encounter.
Seeding
Seed by rating (FIDE, national or club). Round 1 pairs the top half against the bottom half; every round after that pairs players on equal scores, and no two players ever meet twice.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Swiss system in chess?
A format where nobody is eliminated. Every player plays every round, and each round you are paired against someone on the same score — winners meet winners, losers meet losers. After enough rounds the field has sorted itself and the player on top of the standings is the champion, with Buchholz breaking ties.
How many rounds should a chess tournament have?
The ceiling of log2 of your player count is the minimum needed to produce one clear winner: 4 rounds for 16 players, 5 for 32, 7 for 128. Adding a round or two above that separates the field more reliably, if your time control allows it.
Can I run a chess tournament as a knockout bracket?
You can, and elite events like the FIDE World Cup do exactly that. But for a club or school tournament it is usually the wrong choice: half your players are eliminated after one game and have nothing to do. Swiss keeps everybody playing all day and still produces a clear winner.
