What is a Basketball tournament bracket?

A basketball tournament bracket is a scheduling problem with a hard constraint: games are long and gym time is expensive. Every format decision comes back to how many court hours you can actually afford.

That constraint is why basketball's showcase events are knockouts, and why youth and AAU tournaments — where families have driven three hours — bolt a pool stage on the front to guarantee everyone more than one game.

Single Elimination

Recommended

Single elimination is the only format that takes a large field to a champion inside a weekend when each game eats 90 minutes of gym time. Eight teams is 7 games; 16 is 15. And the stakes are the product — sudden death is the entire appeal of March Madness and of a 3x3 street tournament.

Also works

If teams have travelled, one game is not enough basketball. Pool play into a bracket — the standard AAU and youth-tournament setup — guarantees every team three games, and the pool results give you a real basis for seeding the knockout instead of a guess.

How Basketball tournaments actually run

Typical field
8 to 32 teams for 5v5. 3x3 events routinely run 16 to 32 teams in a single day on one or two courts.
Match length
5v5: 60 to 90 minutes with a running clock. 3x3: 10 minutes or first to 21, so you can start a new match every 15 minutes.
Scoring
5v5 is standard basketball scoring. 3x3 is 1 point inside the arc and 2 outside, first to 21 or whoever leads after 10 minutes.
Tiebreakers
In pools: head-to-head, then point differential — cap it at plus or minus 10 so nobody runs up the score on a weak team — then total points scored.
Seeding
Seed 1 against 8, 2 against 7 and so on, so the top seeds can only meet at the end. For pool play, snake-seed across the pools so no pool is stacked.

Frequently asked questions

What bracket format do basketball tournaments use?
Single elimination for showcase and one-day events — it is the only thing that fits a big field into limited gym time. Youth, AAU and club tournaments usually run pool play first and then a single elimination bracket, so travelling teams get a guaranteed three or four games.
How do I run a 3x3 basketball tournament?
3x3 games are 10 minutes or first to 21, so you can turn a court over every 15 minutes. A 16-team single elimination bracket is 15 games, which is under four hours on a single court — the reason 3x3 works as a street or one-day format.
Should I cap point differential in pool play?
Yes. Uncapped differential rewards a strong team for humiliating a weak one, and it decides who advances on margin of victory against the worst team in the pool. Capping at plus or minus 10 keeps the tiebreak meaningful without encouraging blowouts.
