What is a Valorant tournament bracket?

A Valorant tournament bracket has to account for how long a series actually is. A single Bo3 can run three hours, so the bracket you pick is really a decision about how many days your cup lasts.

It also has to account for maps. A team can lose a series on a map pool that never suited them, which is a bad reason to send a genuinely strong roster home from a community cup.

The best bracket format for Valorant

Double Elimination

Recommended

Double elimination is what VCT playoffs run, and it fits the game. A Valorant series is long and map-dependent, so one bad map pool can knock out the better team — the lower bracket gives them the chance to prove it. Eight teams is 14 to 15 series, which is a two-day community cup, and the grand final settles it between the upper- and lower-bracket winners — turn on the bracket reset if you want the upper-bracket team to keep an advantage.

Group Stage + Finals

Also works

For a bigger open cup, run groups first to cut the field cheaply and then bracket the qualifiers. It is more work to organise, but it protects your schedule when 24 teams sign up and you have a limited number of servers and a limited weekend.

How Valorant tournaments actually run

Typical field
8 to 16 teams of five. Community cups are usually 8 or 16; open qualifiers use a group or Swiss stage to cut a large field before the bracket.
Match length
Bo1: 45 to 60 minutes. Bo3: 2 to 3 hours. Schedule bracket rounds in half-day blocks, not hourly slots.
Scoring
First to 13 rounds, win by 2 in overtime. Bo1 in early rounds, Bo3 from the quarter-finals, Bo5 for a grand final.
Tiebreakers
Map wins first, then round differential across the series.
Seeding
Seed by average peak rank or previous cup placement. In the map veto, the higher seed picks side or bans first — make the rule explicit before the cup starts.

Frequently asked questions

What format do Valorant tournaments use?
Double elimination, the same as VCT playoffs. Series are long and heavily map-dependent, so a single series loss is a poor reason to eliminate a strong team. Large open cups usually add a group or Swiss stage first to cut the field before the bracket.
How long does an 8-team Valorant cup take?
Fourteen to fifteen series. With Bo1s early and Bo3s from the quarter-finals, that is realistically two days — or one very long day if you keep everything Bo1 until the semi-finals.
Bo1 or Bo3 for the early rounds?
Bo1 early, Bo3 from the quarters. Bo1 keeps a 16-team cup inside a weekend; Bo3 in the later rounds is where map strategy actually decides matches. VCT plays its grand finals as a straight Bo5; add a bracket reset if you want the upper-bracket team to carry an advantage.
