What is a Rocket League tournament bracket?
Rocket League is the rare esport where the bracket is not fighting the clock. Games are five minutes plus overtime, so a best-of-5 series is done in under 40 minutes and a full tournament fits into a single evening.
That changes which format makes sense. Where a Dota or League organiser has to ration series, a Rocket League organiser can afford to give everyone a second life and still finish before midnight.

Double Elimination
RecommendedBecause series are short, double elimination costs you almost nothing and buys real fairness. A 16-team bracket is 30 to 31 series, and at 30 to 40 minutes per Bo5 across a few lobbies that is one long evening. A five-minute game has enough variance that a single series is a weak signal, and the lower bracket fixes that without blowing up the schedule.

Also worksRLCS itself runs a Swiss stage for its regionals, and it is the better choice above 16 teams: five rounds sorts a 16-team field by record without the 120 series a round robin would demand, and nobody is out on one bad game. Swiss to cut the field, then a double-elimination playoff for the top 8.
Full Swiss guideHow Rocket League tournaments actually run
- Typical field
- 8 to 32 teams of three. 3v3 is the competitive standard; 2v2 and 1v1 brackets run identically with more entrants.
- Match length
- Games are 5 minutes plus overtime. A Bo5 is 30 to 40 minutes; a Bo7 is under an hour.
- Scoring
- Most goals when the clock hits zero. A tied game goes to sudden-death overtime, so there are no draws. Series are Bo5, or Bo7 for a final.
- Tiebreakers
- Series wins, then game differential, then goal differential across the series.
- Seeding
- Seed by average rank (Grand Champion, SSL) or previous cup finish. There is no side advantage, so seeding only decides the matchups.

Frequently asked questions
- What format is best for a Rocket League tournament?
- Double elimination for most community cups. Games are only five minutes, so a losers bracket barely lengthens the night — a 16-team double elimination still runs in one evening — and it stops a strong team going out on the variance of a single five-minute game. Above 16 teams, run a Swiss stage first.
- How long does a 16-team Rocket League cup take?
- Thirty to thirty-one series. At 30 to 40 minutes for a Bo5, across two or three parallel lobbies, that is roughly four to five hours — a single evening, which is why Rocket League cups can realistically run weekly.
- Best of 5 or best of 7?
- Bo5 through the bracket, Bo7 for the grand final. A five-minute game is high-variance, so Bo5 is the minimum that reliably surfaces the better team — and extending the final to Bo7 costs you only about 20 extra minutes.
