What is a League of Legends tournament bracket?
A League of Legends tournament bracket is really a decision about game length. One game runs 30 to 40 minutes, and a best-of-3 with drafts can eat two and a half hours — so the bracket you choose decides whether your cup is an evening or a weekend.
It also has to survive the draft. Champion pools and patch quirks mean a strong roster can lose a series to a composition it never practised, and that is a poor reason to end their tournament.

Double Elimination
RecommendedDouble elimination is what LCK and LCS playoffs run, and it fits the game. Drafts are volatile — one bad champion select can lose a series without saying much about which team is better — so the lower bracket gives them a way back. Eight teams is 14 to 15 series, which is a two-day cup, and the grand final carries real weight because the upper-bracket team arrives with an advantage.

Also worksFor an open cup with 16 or more teams, a group stage cuts the field far more cheaply than a full double-elimination bracket and guarantees every team three games for their signup. Run groups first, then bracket the qualifiers — that is the Worlds structure.
Full Group Stage + Finals guideHow League of Legends tournaments actually run
- Typical field
- 8 to 16 teams of five. Community cups are usually 8; open qualifiers add a group or Swiss stage before the bracket.
- Match length
- Bo1: 30 to 45 minutes plus 10 for the draft. Bo3: 2 to 2.5 hours. Bo5: half a day. Schedule in half-day blocks, not hourly slots.
- Scoring
- A game ends when the Nexus falls — there is no clock. Series are Bo1 in early rounds, Bo3 from the quarter-finals, Bo5 for a grand final.
- Tiebreakers
- Game wins, then head-to-head. In groups: match record, then head-to-head, then a Bo1 tiebreaker game.
- Seeding
- Seed by average peak rank or previous cup finish. The higher seed picks side for game one — blue side has a real advantage because of first pick in the draft.

Frequently asked questions
- What format do League of Legends tournaments use?
- Double elimination, the same as LCS and LCK playoffs. Draft and patch variance mean a single series is a weak signal, so the lower bracket lets a strong team prove itself. Large open cups add a group stage first to cut the field before the bracket.
- How long does an 8-team League of Legends cup take?
- Fourteen to fifteen series. With Bo1 early and Bo3 from the quarter-finals, that is realistically two days — games run 30 to 40 minutes and the draft adds 10 more, so a single Bo3 blocks out two and a half hours.
- Should the higher seed get side choice?
- Yes. Blue side has a measurable win-rate edge because it picks first in the draft, so giving the higher seed blue side in game one is the standard reward for seeding. After that, sides usually alternate with the losing team choosing.
