What is a FIFA / EA FC tournament bracket?
A FIFA or EA FC tournament bracket has one job that everyone underestimates: making sure the friend who drove over does not lose a single game to a lucky counter-attack and then sit on the sofa for two hours.
Console tournaments are usually bottlenecked on hardware, not time — matches are only 12 to 16 minutes, but you may only have one or two consoles. The format has to keep the controller moving while still giving everybody a real amount of football.

Group Stage + Finals
RecommendedFIFAe's own competitions run groups into a knockout, and it is the right shape for a living room too: groups of four, three games each, top two advance to a bracket. Matches are short, so the group stage is almost free — 16 players is 24 games — and it fixes the thing that actually ruins console tournaments, which is somebody being eliminated in fifteen minutes by one deflected goal.

Full Double Elimination guideHow FIFA / EA FC tournaments actually run
- Typical field
- 8 to 32 players. Groups of four work best. With one console, keep it to 8 to 16 or you will be there all night.
- Match length
- 12 to 16 minutes with 6-minute halves. Add 10 more if a knockout game goes to extra time and penalties.
- Scoring
- Group stage: 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw, 0 for a loss. Knockout: extra time, then penalties.
- Tiebreakers
- Points, then goal difference, then goals scored, then head-to-head — the same order the real competitions use.
- Seeding
- Draw at random unless you have results from a previous night. If you want the tournament to be about the players rather than the squads, restrict team selection — same star rating, or a one-time-use rule.

Frequently asked questions
- What format is best for a FIFA tournament?
- Groups into a knockout, the same as FIFAe and the real World Cup. Games are only 12 to 16 minutes, so a group stage costs you very little time and guarantees everyone three matches. Straight knockout means half your friends are out fifteen minutes after arriving.
- Should we allow the same team to be picked twice?
- A one-time-use rule (once a team is picked it is gone for the rest of the tournament) is the standard fix. It stops the night becoming six people playing as the same super-club and forces genuine variety. The alternative is a star-rating cap.
- How long does a 16-player FIFA tournament take?
- The group stage is 24 games and the knockout is 15 more — around 39 games at roughly 15 minutes each. On two consoles running in parallel that is about five hours; on one console, plan for a full day or cut the field to 8.
