What is a Dota 2 tournament bracket?

A Dota 2 tournament bracket has to plan around games that routinely pass 45 minutes and occasionally pass 70. There is no clock: a game ends when an Ancient falls, and that makes scheduling genuinely hard.

The International solved this with a group stage feeding a double-elimination playoff, and that structure has since become the default for everything from majors down to community cups.

Double Elimination

Recommended

Double elimination is how The International runs its main event, and Dota's long games and deep draft make it the fair choice: a team can lose a series to a cheese draft or one 70-minute throw without being the worse team. The lower bracket is where they prove it. Note that 16 teams is 30 to 31 series — for a community cup, start from 8.

Also works

Above 16 teams, a group stage is the cheap way to cut the field: everyone plays a guaranteed set of games, and the results seed the playoff bracket honestly rather than by reputation. That is exactly what TI does before its double-elimination main event.

How Dota 2 tournaments actually run

Typical field
8 to 16 teams of five. TI-style events run a 16-team group stage into an 8-team playoff bracket.
Match length
Bo1: 35 to 50 minutes plus draft. Bo2 groups: about 90 minutes. Bo3: 2.5 to 3.5 hours — one long game can blow past any slot you give it.
Scoring
Destroy the Ancient. Group stages are usually Bo2, so a 1-1 draw is a real result. Playoffs are Bo3, with a Bo5 grand final.
Tiebreakers
In Bo2 groups draws are common, so: match points first, then head-to-head, then a Bo1 tiebreaker game.
Seeding
Seed by average MMR or previous results. Group finish then seeds the bracket, with the top finishers starting in the upper bracket.

Frequently asked questions

What format do Dota 2 tournaments use?
A group stage feeding a double-elimination playoff — the structure The International uses. Groups guarantee games and produce an honest seeding; the double-elimination playoff means one bad draft does not eliminate a title contender.
Why are Dota 2 group stages best of 2?
Because there is no clock and games run long. A Bo2 fits two games into a predictable block and allows a 1-1 draw, which keeps a large group stage on schedule where Bo3s would overrun. It also means both teams get to play both sides of the draft.
How much time should I budget for a Dota 2 bracket?
More than you think. A Bo3 averages around two and a half hours, but a single 70-minute game can wreck a slot. For an 8-team double elimination with Bo3s, plan two full days and build slack into the schedule.
