What is a Counter-Strike 2 tournament bracket?
A CS2 tournament bracket has to cut a large open field down to a playoff bracket without either eliminating good teams on one bad map or scheduling a hundred-match round robin.
Valve solved this for the Majors with a Swiss stage, and the format has become the default for community cups and open qualifiers for exactly the same reasons.

Swiss
RecommendedThe CS Major's opening stages are Swiss, and it is the right answer for any field bigger than 8. Nobody is knocked out by a single bad map — teams are paired against others on the same record — and after 5 rounds a 16-team field has sorted itself into 3-0s and 0-3s without the 120 matches a round robin would demand. It is the cheapest fair way to cut a big open field down to a playoff bracket.

Also worksOnce you are down to the top 8, switch to double elimination for the playoffs — exactly as the Majors do. And for a small community cup that starts at 8 teams, skip the Swiss entirely and run double elimination from the first match.
Full Double Elimination guideHow Counter-Strike 2 tournaments actually run
- Typical field
- 16 to 32 teams for a Swiss stage — 5 rounds sorts 16 teams. Playoff brackets are almost always 8.
- Match length
- Bo1: 45 to 60 minutes under MR12. Bo3: 2.5 to 3 hours.
- Scoring
- First to 13 rounds, win by 2 in overtime (MR12). Advancement and elimination matches in a Swiss stage are usually Bo3.
- Tiebreakers
- Buchholz — the combined record of the opponents you have already faced — is the CS Major's own tiebreak, then round differential.
- Seeding
- Seed round 1 by ranking, pairing the top half against the bottom half. Every round after that pairs teams on identical records, and no two teams ever play each other twice.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the Swiss format in CS2?
- The format the CS Majors use for their opening stages. Nobody is eliminated on one loss — each round you are paired against a team on the same record, and you play until you reach three wins (advance) or three losses (out). A 16-team field resolves in 5 rounds, with Buchholz breaking seeding ties.
- Swiss or double elimination for a CS2 cup?
- Swiss when you have 16 or more teams and need to cut the field fairly; double elimination once you are down to a playoff bracket of 8, which is exactly how the Majors are structured. For a small 8-team community cup, just run double elimination from the start.
- How many rounds does a Swiss stage need?
- Five rounds for 16 teams, and that is what the Majors use — enough for every team to reach three wins or three losses. For 32 teams you need six or seven. Bo1 for the opening rounds and Bo3 for advancement and elimination matches is the standard compromise.
