What is the Swiss system?
The Swiss system pairs teams with similar records each round — winners play winners, losers play losers. No team is ever eliminated, and no team plays the same opponent twice. After a set number of rounds, final standings are determined by overall performance.
Swiss is the most efficient format for large fields. A 128-team Swiss tournament can be decided in just 7 rounds — far fewer than a round robin would require. It's widely used in chess, Magic: The Gathering, Hearthstone, and Pokémon competitive circuits.

- How many rounds should a Swiss tournament have?
- The recommended minimum is ⌈log₂(N)⌉ rounds — the ceiling of the base-2 logarithm of the team count. For 8 teams that is 3 rounds. For 16 teams, 4 rounds. For 32 teams, 5 rounds. For 64 teams, 6 rounds. For 128 teams, 7 rounds. This formula ensures the field is statistically separated enough that top finishers can be determined with confidence. Running fewer rounds means multiple undefeated teams may still be tied at the end, making final standings ambiguous. EasyBracket.gg sets the recommended minimum as the default and allows you to add extra rounds if you want a longer event. Extra rounds also reduce the role of luck in final standings, which is particularly useful for high-stakes competitive events.
- What happens if two teams have the same final record?
- EasyBracket.gg resolves ties using Buchholz tiebreakers, which is the standard in competitive Swiss tournaments worldwide. A team's Buchholz score is the sum of all their opponents' win counts at the end of the tournament — so a team that beat strong opponents scores higher than one that beat weak opponents, even with the same record. This rewards performance quality rather than just outcomes. If teams are still tied after Buchholz, the secondary tiebreaker is head-to-head result between the tied teams. Buchholz is used by FIDE for chess, by most major trading card game circuits including Magic: The Gathering and Pokémon, and by Hearthstone and other esports Swiss events. It is widely regarded as the fairest mechanical tiebreaker for Swiss formats.
- Can I cut to a top-8 bracket after Swiss rounds?
- Swiss mode in EasyBracket.gg runs all rounds within a single pool and produces final standings without a separate bracket phase. If you want to cut to a top-8 or top-4 after Swiss rounds, use the Group Stage format instead. Group Stage with Swiss as the group-stage phase runs performance-based pairings within groups for the first set of rounds, then automatically advances the top finishers from each group into a single or double elimination finals bracket. This is the standard format used in Hearthstone Grandmasters, Pokémon Regional Championships, and similar events that want the breadth of Swiss with the excitement of a knockout finale.
