What is single elimination?
Single elimination is the most widely used tournament format in the world. Each match is decisive: win and advance, lose and you're out. There are no second chances, which makes every game high-stakes and exciting for players and spectators alike.
A 16-team bracket runs 15 matches across 4 rounds. The result is unambiguous — one team is crowned champion, the rest are eliminated in a clear sequence. That clarity is why single elimination is the default format for everything from the FIFA World Cup knockout stage to local gaming nights.

Frequently asked questions
- How many matches does a single elimination bracket have?
- A single elimination bracket always produces exactly N−1 matches, where N is the number of participating teams. For 8 teams, that is 7 matches across 3 rounds. For 16 teams, 15 matches across 4 rounds. For 32 teams, 31 matches across 5 rounds. This formula holds regardless of bracket size and makes single elimination the most time-efficient format available — every match has a direct consequence, and the total match count is known before the first ball is kicked. For event organisers, this means you can schedule precisely: a 16-team bracket with 45-minute matches needs roughly 11 hours of total play. EasyBracket.gg auto-generates the bracket structure from your team list, places byes correctly when the count is not a power of two, and updates the bracket live as scores are entered.
- Can I add a third-place match?
- Yes — EasyBracket.gg generates a third-place match automatically when you enable it during tournament setup. The two semi-final losers are placed into a separate bracket slot and play a single match to determine third and fourth place. This is standard practice in most professional single-elimination events, from FIFA World Cup to esports championships, because it gives losing semi-finalists one final competitive game and gives spectators an additional meaningful match to watch. The third-place match is completely optional: if your event is time-constrained or your bracket has more than 32 teams, you may prefer to skip it. If you enable it after a tournament has started, EasyBracket.gg adds the slot automatically when the semi-final results are entered.
- What if I have an odd number of teams?
- EasyBracket.gg handles odd team counts by assigning byes automatically. A bye is a free pass to the next round given to a team when the bracket cannot be filled evenly. Byes are always assigned to the highest seeds in the first round — so if you have 12 teams, the top 4 seeds receive a bye into the second round while the remaining 8 teams play first-round matches. The bracket structure is calculated to maintain symmetry in later rounds. You do not need to create empty slots or dummy teams manually. Simply enter your full team list during setup and EasyBracket.gg builds the correct bracket shape for that exact count, whether it is 5, 9, 12, 20, or any other non-power-of-two number.
- Can spectators follow scores in real time?
- Yes — spectators can follow the bracket live with no account required. Share the tournament’s public link and anyone with it can open the bracket page, see all match results update in real time, and track which teams advance through each round. The public view works on any device: phone, tablet, or desktop. Scores refresh automatically every 60 seconds, so spectators never need to reload the page. The link can also be converted into a QR code from within EasyBracket.gg — print it, display it on a screen at your venue, or share it in a Discord or group chat before the event starts. Organiser controls are only available to the tournament creator.
