What is round robin?

In a round robin tournament, every team plays against every other team. Points are awarded for wins, draws, and losses. The team with the most points at the end of all rounds is declared the winner. No team is eliminated until the last match is played.

Round robin is the most statistically fair format — a single bad performance can be recovered from over subsequent rounds. It's standard for league play in sports like football, basketball, and esports regular seasons, as well as board game and card game tournaments.

Frequently asked questions

How many matches does a round robin have?

A round robin tournament produces exactly N×(N−1)/2 total matches, where N is the number of teams. Every team plays every other team exactly once. For 4 teams that is 6 matches. For 6 teams, 15 matches. For 8 teams, 28 matches. For 10 teams, 45 matches. Match counts grow quickly: 16 teams produce 120 matches, which is why round robin is best suited to groups of 4 to 12 teams, or used as a group-stage phase before knockout rounds. How are tiebreakers handled?

EasyBracket.gg calculates tiebreakers automatically using a three-level system. First, teams are ranked by total points. If two or more teams are tied on points, the tiebreaker moves to head-to-head result between the tied teams only. If the head-to-head is still tied, the final tiebreaker is goal difference (points scored minus points conceded). You can customise the points awarded for a win, draw, and loss during tournament setup — the default is 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw, 0 for a loss, which is standard in football and most sports leagues. Changes to the points system apply retroactively to all completed matches in the standings calculation.

Can I combine round robin with a knockout stage?

Yes — the Group Stage format is designed for exactly this combination. Instead of a single round-robin pool containing all teams, Group Stage splits teams into smaller groups that each play a round robin internally. The top finishers from each group then advance into a single or double elimination knockout bracket. This is the most common format in professional esports and global sports tournaments: teams earn their spot through fair group-stage play, then compete in high-stakes knockouts. All updates happen automatically every 60 seconds, so standings refresh in real time as scores are entered. The share link works on any device and can be converted to a QR code for display at a physical venue. You can also export the final standings as a CSV file at the end of the tournament for record-keeping or announcement purposes.
