What is double elimination?

Double elimination gives every team a second chance. Teams that lose in the winners bracket drop to a separate losers bracket and can still win the tournament. Only two losses eliminate a team, which means a single bad game can't ruin a team's tournament.

The format is standard in competitive esports — Smash Bros., StarCraft, CS2 Majors, and most fighting game tournaments all use it. Two brackets run in parallel, converging in a Grand Final between the winners bracket champion and the losers bracket champion.

Frequently asked questions

How many matches are in a double elimination tournament?

A double elimination tournament produces between N and 2N−1 matches, depending on whether a bracket reset occurs in the Grand Final. For 8 teams, that is between 8 and 15 matches. For 16 teams, between 16 and 31 matches. The exact count depends on results: every team must lose twice before being eliminated, so teams that travel the full losers bracket path add extra matches to the total. This is nearly double the games of single elimination, which is why double elimination is preferred when players travel long distances — you are guaranteed at least two competitive matches regardless of your first-round result. Does the winners bracket champion get an advantage in the Grand Final?

EasyBracket.gg supports both Grand Final styles. In the standard format, the winners bracket champion and the losers bracket champion play a single Grand Final set with no built-in advantage — a match win ends the tournament. In the bracket-reset format, the winners bracket champion has a one-set advantage: the losers bracket champion must win two consecutive sets to take the title, while the winners bracket champion only needs one set. The bracket-reset format is standard in most professional fighting game and esports circuits because it rewards going undefeated through the winners bracket. Set your Grand Final style during tournament setup; you can also change it before the Grand Final is played without affecting any earlier results.

Can I track both brackets at the same time?

Yes — EasyBracket.gg shows both brackets simultaneously in a single scrollable view. The winners bracket is displayed on the left and the losers bracket on the right. Each bracket updates live as you enter match results: when a team loses in the winners bracket, they automatically drop into the correct losers bracket slot without manual placement. You can zoom in on either bracket or navigate both at full scale. The public share page that spectators see shows the same dual-bracket layout. For large tournaments with 32 or 64 teams, the brackets can be navigated by scrolling or with the pan and zoom controls built into the bracket view.

Do spectators need an account?

No — spectators never need an account. Share the public bracket link and anyone with it can view both the winners bracket and the losers bracket in real time. The public view shows all match results, team names, and which stage each remaining team is in, including the Grand Final slot when it is set. Scores update automatically every 60 seconds. The link works on any device and can be shared as a QR code for display at a venue. Spectator access is view-only: they can see everything the bracket shows but cannot edit match results or tournament settings. Only the tournament creator has editing permissions.
